The Wide Emblem

It’s finally time to get to the heart of the issue I have chosen to talk about this semester. It angers me when people find an excuse for living a messed up life due to past circumstances they have gone through.

For instance the man who chooses to beat his wife up because he always saw his dad do the same with his mom while growing up.

Or perhaps the young adult who chooses to do drugs merely because he saw his mom or dad do the same and come home drunk every night.

Or even the young adolescent who has no ambitions in life because since he lives on poverty there is no way he can go to college…..

People need to realize the power they have to turn their lives around. They need to know their potential and that anything is possible on this Earth.

This is my logo:

At first sight you may see a path and then you may notice the image of God in the background.

In this Prezi I explain more about the meaning this logo has for me and just maybe it will mean the same to you.

Community discourse

Growing up as a child one explores the need to belong with the rest of a group. We usually see this take place in schools since it is after all, the place where children spend most of their time at.

I think the school one attends can make a difference in the values a child acquires which influence the way he or she associates with the world. In my case, I attended an evangelical private school so I learned about God early on in life and so did my friends.

Extracurricular activities outside of school also have an impact on the person your child becomes one day. I had two special girlfriends who were into community beauty pageants! So, for a little while I was taking modeling classes and participated in a local pageant at the age of 6 or so.

Now that I look back at pictures, two key things followed me into my adulthood: faith in God and beauty pageants!

I explain more on this Prezi!

Entertainment Discourse

Everyone has a favorite movie or tv show they could not live without growing up.

One TV show I have dear memories with is Sesame Street’s show back in the 1990’s.

The characters in the show have very unique personalities which is one of the key ways to attract children to the show.

When watching Sesame Street whether as a child or an adult, one finds a level of comfort on its main character Big Bird who always soothes you and teaches you a lesson.

A dad’s absence…

http://prezi.com/-_5sm7rdzmww/where-have-you-been-dad/

In this photo appears Iris (to the right) at approximately 6 years old accompanied by her younger sister and her mom who just began to play dad’s role after the divorce.

Iris was too little to understand the complexity of a divorce, much less the impact  it would have in her life.

All Iris ever wanted was just to spend quality time with mom and quality time with dad, whenever possible.

So, Iris, along with her sister, Eneris visited dad every other weekend in his home with his ‘mean’ wife, but as the years went by those visits became less and less frequent.

Her father, René never fought for the love and affection of his daughters. At least that is how Iris always interpreted it.

As Iris went into her teenage years, her dad never mentioned anything about celebrating her Sweet 15 which is something she had always dreamed of.

So her Mom with the few resources she had at the time pulled together an unbeliavably beautiiful Sweet 15 birthday party for Iris. Quinceanero or Sweet 15 is a Latin American tradition similar to the American Sweet 16 custom. As a part of this Hispanic tradition the birthday girl’s father is supposed to change her shoes from sandals to heels, symbolizing the transition from childhood to the adolescent life.

But Iris was devastated that her dad wasnt there to change her shoe.

Until this day her dad hasn’t given her an explanation as to why he wasn’t there. The point is that Iris forgave him for his lack o involvement in her life and hoped that one day when she would get married her dad would be there to walk her down the aisle to her future husband.

The years passed and anytime she could, Iris would go to Puerto Rico where her dad lives and spend as much quality time as time allowed.

Years later, Iris becomes pregnant of her fiancee and they decide to get married.

Iris tried contacting her dad to tell him about the news but he was nowhere to be found. She had to tell him about everything through his voicemail. She left messages with his ‘new wife’ and his mom (Iris’ grandma).

But weeks went by and Iris never heard back from her dad.

The so much awaited wedding day arrived. Iris looked gloriously in her bridal dress. She was as happy as the day her husband to be proposed to her.

It was Iris’ mom and her little brother who once again filled up her dad’s place.

Iris and her husband, Adam lived happily ever after.

PS. Iris holds no grudges against her dad and hopes he’ll get to meet the baby some day.

Univision News Tumblr: When Jorge met Anderson

When I see this video I get goose bumps and it forces me to smile. Seeing 2 great journalists (Jorge Ramos from Univision and Anderson Cooper from CNN) come together and shake hands and joke about their grey hair reminds me it doesn’t matter which language you speak in. We are all humans and will always have other ways to connect with one another.

univisionnews:

After a long day covering the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Anderson Cooper was on his way out of the press area outside the 9/11 Memorial Site…and ran into his “TV twin” Jorge Ramos from Univision, who was wrapping up the day’s tapings as well.

Career Discourse: The move which defined my career

I was in the 9th grade when I was told my family and I were moving to the United States. I remember being in my classroom and talking to classmates about how radical my life would be without being able to speak in Spanish anymore. The truth is I was in a high level of distresses and somewhat afraid.

“Can you imagine Iris, all your classes being taught in English? How will you understand anything? -my friend Humberto asked.

But once I arrived to Orlando, Fl I discovered other people spoke my same language! I was shocked when I saw Hispanic media stream news and even novelas (soap operas) in Spanish!

Once in my English speaking high school, I discovered that many Spanish speaking students like I where missing out on school events because they did not understand the morning announcements on TV!

Well, I thought to myself maybe I can be a News anchor one day who presents the news in Spanish for people who have just moved to the United States from Latin America. I figured, they need some source of information while transitioning…

Since those days in H.S I always knew I wanted to work for the Spanish language television network with the largest audience in the United States and Latin America, Univision Studios.

As a matter of fact, I just completed an internship with them over the summer.

Here’s a link to my memory map =)
